from normal to bump

Hey there

Ehhhh so tired. Been up all morning and night rendering out my scenes.

I did get some great feedback from some folks with normal mapping experience! Thank you to all of them. I will most certianly tinker around with those suggestions after I finish  my rendering. Instead of a normal map I just used a bump map to make him look gruffy!

Take a look at my new, (and not so hollywood-esque) looking cowboy!

I also put up a screenshot of my normal map with UV’s ontop if anyone wants to take a look see.

Thanks!

Mind you this is just a color pass with raytrace shadows…i am gonna be doing a spec and a occlusion for him too…ohhh time is of the essense!

Just to clarify, that really ugly dark patch underneath the chin where the neck is, has been smoothed out a bit. It was quite jaggedy before…I think it was because my cowboy has a hankerchief , it was covering up some of the geo and I somehow managed to neglect that little section…ahhh yes how wonderful normal maps are in pointing out all your problems!

crazy fun times!

Phew! I need to take a break!

Sheez, i’ve been working non-stop on trying to get my demo reel up and running…I’ve managed to pump out a few color shots (again I must remind you all that they are JUST color shots, no fancy Occlusion or Spec Maps), Currently i am almost ready to render. I still have to do some facial animation and maybe play around with the lighting too.

I do however have one question for anyone out there who know lots about normal mapping.. i am currently trying to render out a normal map for this cowboy and the map seems to be a bit off. I don’t think that it is a topology error because my meshes are exactly the same. Could it be a lighting thing??

MMmmmm….only time and a much need tutorial will tell!

bleh! it's a bad normal map

brain-storming for my demo reel

During my brain-storming for ideas for a demo-reel,  I did this oil painting of an image I took from a magazine.  It was a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal as his character Jack Twist in the film “Brokeback Mountian”.  Something about Jake’s expression really caught my interest.  I knew I wanted to work with that “look” further and hence,  was one of my main inspirations to do the ‘lonesome cowbody’ storyline in my demo reel.

Below is a re-rendered shot of my cowboy, which I am also in the process of re-animating and re-rigging…(ahhhh fun times to come.)  In addition is an image of my oil painting of Jake that I did.

I hope you like it!

playing with occlusion colors

Hello there!

Well, as promised I am back with a couple ambient occlusion shots of my truck and cowboy from my demo reel.

I am now working with Maya 2009 and it seems that the render layer options have changed a bit.  There is no longer a “presets” tab that you can apply an Occulsion shader onto your selected items. There is a new “Add New Render Pass Tab”  option which I am still trying to figure out.  It seems that most of the tutorials on render layers out there are still from 2008.  So if anyone out there knows about how to do render layers in 2009, any information would be super helpful!

Here are a couple of shots I rendered out just playing with the occlusion color options.

Ahhh yes, and before things get too color-fully…I must warn those out there that I love big, bright and shiny colors!:)

I’m Linked(in)

Greetings and salutations all!

Well, i am finally getting my networking going and so far I am apart of a few awesome groups. I just registered on at CG Talk:  http://forums.cgsociety.org/ (great artwork up there by the way,  very inspiring!)  I am also visiting the Artery frequently : http://www.artery.ca/. That site is great for getting feedback on your demo reel and work, I found that people were very helpful there.

The most recent networking site that I’ve gotten hooked up with is LinkedIn! http://www.linkedin.com/in/jennifertiles It’s really cool.   I think that maybe down the road hard-copy resumes will become a thing of the past and everybody will be just…well, LinkedIn! (It’s probably better for the environment anyways!:)

Oh! The other day I came across an excellent video that this extremely talented animator did. Talk about utilizing public space! This short film is amazing, check it out:

I hope you enjoyed the film!

I will be back later and I’ll post some shots of my Chevy Truck with an Occlusion Map.

digital alchemly

Last night I and some fellow BCIT’ers went to a “Women in Games Mixer” hosted by Digital Alchemy Entertainment: www.alchemyentertainment.com.  It was really fun and exciting!

I got to network, dance, network, dance some more…..rest, network  and then finally burn up the dance floor in one last final explosion of Jennergy Dance moves!

My friends and I got to meet Trevor Wyatt who is not only the Production Manager at Digital Alchemy Entertainment, but he is also an awesome DJ! Trevor, (aka dj splitmilk), talked to us a bit about the industry, where he’s worked at in previous jobs and also of all the rendering parties he’s had with fellow co-workers. (Ahhhh yes, there are many of those in this industry.) Ya! All and all it was a great night and I can’t wait to be apart of more networking events.

Here are some redone color texture maps  for my Chevy truck in my demo reel.  Enjoy!
